Jalapeno Popper Wonton Cups

Our Story

These are one of Gab's favorite bite-sized appetizers to make when people are coming over. They are crispy on the outside, creamy on the inside, and easy to customize depending on how spicy you want them. They started on Gab's Substack and became an instant game day staple around here: a big platter goes out, and it comes back empty.

Quick Stats

  • Serves: 6 to 8 (about 24 cups)

  • Prep: 15 min

  • Cook: 20 min

  • Total: 35 min

  • Difficulty: 1 / 5

  • Cost: $

Ingredients

For the wonton cups

  • 24 wonton wrappers

  • Cooking spray or olive oil spray

For the filling

  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened

  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar or Mexican-blend cheese

  • 2 to 3 jalapenos, finely diced (seeds removed for less heat)

  • 1/4 cup sour cream

  • 4 to 6 slices bacon, cooked and chopped

  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder

  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

Optional garnishes

  • Extra chopped bacon

  • Green onions or chives

  • Thin jalapeno slices on top (like we do)

Instructions

  1. Prep the wonton cups. Preheat the oven to 375F and lightly spray a mini muffin tin. Press one wonton wrapper into each cup, gently folding the corners. Lightly spray the tops and bake for 6 to 8 minutes, until just starting to crisp.

  2. Make the filling. In a bowl, mix the cream cheese, shredded cheese, sour cream, jalapenos, bacon, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper until smooth and well combined.

  3. Fill and bake. Spoon the mixture evenly into the pre-baked wonton cups. Return to the oven and bake for 8 to 10 minutes, until the filling is hot and bubbly and the edges are golden.

  4. Finish and serve. Let cool slightly, then garnish with extra bacon, green onions, or chives. Serve warm on a big platter so people can grab and go.

What We'd Change Next Time

For a lighter version, swap half the cream cheese for plain Greek yogurt. Skip the bacon to make them vegetarian, or add a pinch of crushed red pepper or cayenne if you like extra heat. They are best eaten warm while the wontons stay crisp, so bake the second batch as the first one disappears.
